What we learnt from our crazy Pin Mount System test [Video]

These Pin Mount™ transport tanks are a 'one of a kind'. Trust me, there is a valid reason for that. Unlike the traditional hoop systems that have been used for years, the Pin Mount™ system doesn't require a frame around the tank to secure it. Instead, it uses a steel pin through a molded hole in each leg. These pins then bolt down through the trailer bed. The Pin Mount™ system is less expensive, more secure, and also eliminates wear points on the tank that occur with the hoop system.

How old are these tanks and where did they come from?

We have been manufacturing these horizontal leg tanks for over 10 years. Now, you're probably surprised you've never heard of them. Like any new idea, the mounting system has to be tried and proven before it is trusted. That is exactly what has happened. This amazing pin mount design originated from a sister company in Australia. From there the concept was brought to North America and has already pleased thousands of customers.

Now, we have got that preamble out of the way, it's time to get into the real stuff. Let's discuss this amazing tank durability test as it unfolded.

Preparation begins:

Although these leg tanks have been proven, we needed to take this design to a whole new level. So, we decided to do something outside the box. Something that would convince anyone that this is the most secure mounting system in history. Literally.


After a lengthy table discussion, we decided that there was only one way to test if the Pin Mount™ system is as strong as what we say it is. We came up with a list of equipment we needed to truly push the limits.

The equipment we needed was:

  • A 3,200 gallon horizontal leg tank featuring the Pin Mount™ system.
  • A large crane with a lifting capacity more than 30,000 lbs.
  • A water truck that can hold a lot of water.

After a few phone calls, we had secured a crane and a water truck from some local businesses. Now it was time to get to work. We began with plugging the breathers in the stainless lid on the horizontal tank. The next step was to mount the pins in the tank, and build a lift rail to distribute the weight evenly during the test. Once these tasks were completed, we were ready to start.

The test is underway:

We met in an open lot north of the Enduraplas headquarters. Our marketing team was there in full force, with cameras, go-pros, and the drone so they wouldn't miss a second of the action. We wanted to broadcast these unknown results to the world.


After carefully rolling the 3200 gallon tank onto its top and securing the straps to the pins, we hoisted it up. The suspense began. We backed the water truck into position and began pumping water into the tank. This test was truly becoming exciting. Aside from a couple small drips that came from the breathers, there was no sign of stress or strain on the tank.

When the water truck was empty, we headed back to the water filling station, about 5 miles away. We refilled the 1500 gallon tank and returned. Wow, by now the tank had been hanging for over 30 minutes! We hooked up the fill hose again, blasted in a second 1500 gallons of water into the tank. We watched carefully for any hint failure or strain, but couldn't find a thing!


The only sign of fatigue that we saw was the pins that we had used to attach the straps to, were bending slightly. We realized then that it was due to the fact that we had only used 2 inch wide straps, so the pressure of lifting 27,000 pounds was not spread evenly over the length of the pins.

Suspense, suspense, suspense: What were the results?

When the tank was full of water, we unhooked the fill hose and stepped back. What more could we do now that we had 3,000 gallons of water in the tank and the pins were still holding strong? Well, after talking with the crane operator, we decided there was one other thing we could do.... bounce it! I mean, if you want to prove how reliable and rugged something is, you have to put it up to the toughest test, right?


So with that, the crane operator dropped the crane arm 2 feet...  and we held our breath and waited. The tank fell like a rock... a 27,000 pound rock... and was brought up short as it came to the end of the cable. Other than swinging around a bit, the tank was unaffected. We did this a couple times with the same result. It seemed like the pin mount system could take anything we threw at it.

Oh crap, now we have to find a way to empty the tank:

You know those moments when you do something fun and you forget about a plan to clean up. That's what we did. When we were convinced we had proven that the Pin Mount™ system is virtually indestructible, we decided there was only one way to empty the tank. Knock the breakers off the stainless steel lid. This was quite the challenge. After banging and hitting them with a large tool, they gave way.


When the water hit the ground and spread out, we noticed it turned into a giant heart shape. It appeared even the water loves "hanging" with Enduraplas tanks:)
